THORSTEIN B. VEBLEN (1857-1929)

Principal figura da Escola Institucionalista Americana, Thorstein Bunde Veblen foi um filósofo, sociólogo e economista altamente controvertido. 
Nasceu em Wisconsin de pais de origem norueguesa. Estudou no Carleton College e nas universidades John Hopkins, Cornell e Yale, onde obteve o doutorado em 1884. Veblen trabalhou nas universidades de Chicago (de onde foi expulso por manter relações sexuais com alunas), Stanford (de onde lhe obrigaram ir embora por sua atitude crítica para com os homens de negócio) e Missouri, sendo que, em nenhum caso, pôde superar o nível de professor auxiliar. Fortemente crítico com o "stablishment", foi escolhido, contudo, por seus colegas de profissão, para a presidência da American Economic Association.
