oan Violet Robinson (de solteira Maurice) pertenceu ao grupo de economistas mais destacados do século XX. Líder da "Escola de Cambridge", foi marshalliana na origem, fervorosa keynesiana em seguida e, finalmente, membro destacado das escolas neo-ricardiana e pós-keynesiana.
Suas contribuições à literatura econômica foram numerosas e abordaram múltiplas áreas. Joan Robinson introduziu a teoria da concorrência imperfeita em seu famoso livro de 1933. Depois, em 1937, elaborou uma fiel exposição das idéias de Keynes. Em 1942 voltou sua atenção para a teoria marxista. Mais tarde concentrou sua atenção em problemas metodológicos.
Também esteve muito interessada nos problemas do subdesenvolvimento. Nos anos setenta surpreendeu com seus elogios à "grande revolução cultural" da China maoísta.
Professora da Universidade de Cambridge desde 1931, não chegou a ser catedrática até 1965. Nunca lhe deram o Prêmio Nobel, o que foi considerado um dos mais tristes e injustos tratamentos deliberadamente discriminatórios.
