Prêmio Nobel 2004
Economista norueguês que obteve o Prêmio Nobel de Economia no ano 2004, compartilhado com Edward C. Prescott, "por suas contribuições à dinâmica macroeconômica, ou seja, a consistência do tempo na política macroeconômica e as forças que regulam os ciclos econômicos".
Kydland estudou na Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration onde se graduou em 1968 e obteve o doutorado na Carnegie Mellon em 1973. É professor na Tepper School of Business da Carnegie-Mellon University, da University of Califórnia, Santa Barbara e pertencente ao conselho editorial da revista Macroeconomic Dynamics.
É interessado especialmente em política econômica fiscal e monetária, economia do trabalho e ciclos econômicos.
Suas principais contribuições teóricas seguem a corrente da "Nova Macroeconomia Clássica", que, abandonando as propostas e conceitos keynesianos, voltam a manter as recomendações de política econômica mediante regras fixas, rejeitando a aplicação de políticas discricionárias.
